KALA opened in June 2024 on Jalan Labuansait, a short walk from Padang Padang Beach. The founders, Roman Golubyatinikov, Vladimir Vanin and Ryan Jefferson, previously ran Lola's Cantina and Two Moods, and modelled KALA on a Greek taverna with a pared-back room of wood, rattan, an open kitchen and a wood fire at its centre.
Build a table from meze of tzatziki, hummus or labneh with flatbread, then dolmadakia with smoked sour cream, feta tempura or halloumi tiropita. From the fire come grilled octopus with baby potatoes and peperonata, lamb shoulder with chickpeas and tomato, whole market fish and souvlaki of chicken or beef-and-pork keftedes. Finish with baklava cheesecake or loukoumades.
Suited to couples and friends after a day at the Bukit beaches, with Negroni and Aperol Spritz on tap and a list of classic and natural wines. Executive chef Zarrukh Farkhodovich previously cooked at Arzak in San Sebastián. Book through TableCheck or WhatsApp; groups of six or more should call ahead.
