Noema takes its name from the Greek word for thought, and the owners say the thought behind it is charcoal. The restaurant sits on Jalan Suweta in central Ubud, a short walk from the palace, and frames itself as a Greek barbecue house. Ingredients are sourced locally where possible.
Most of the menu comes off the coals. Souvlaki skewers and kontosouvli, large chunks of marinated pork or chicken grilled on a spit, are the core of it, and the Greek-style lamb chops are seasoned with herbs before grilling. Grilled seafood and gyros fill out the mains. For something slower, the moussaka layers vegetables and minced beef under bechamel. A mixed grill platter is the easiest way to try several meats at once.
It is a relaxed choice for couples, friends and families after a day around Ubud, and it works well for drinks too, with a bar serving Aperol spritz and cocktails. Pork is on the menu, so it is not halal. Bookings can be made through Chope, and they are a good idea in the evening.
